Introduction to Portraiture in Oils: weekly studio course at the Essential School of Painting

I’m delighted to be teaching an Introduction to Portraiture in Oils course at the Essential School of Painting this spring.

Join me for an engaging and accessible evening course from 30 January - 27 March 2025 at the ESOP studio in Wood Green, and learn how to capture the human face with confidence and creativity.

Working with professional models, you will develop the essential draughtsmanship and technical painting skills for portraiture.

We will cover:

  • The fundamental proportions of the face and head;

  • Techniques for building volume and depth using tonal values;

  • An introduction to colour theory, including colour choices for creating “skin tones”;

  • The process of transitioning from drawing to painting.

This 8-week course provides a structured and supportive environment to deepen your understanding of portraiture. It is designed for those with some experience in oil painting, but beginners and experienced painters are also welcome. All materials are included except for canvas, which you can purchase from the school.

Join us for a rewarding weekend of developing your painting and drawing skills in a supportive and dynamic environment. Book now to avoid disappointment - places are limited to 12 students.
